Other Volunteer Efforts

When AmeriCorps service cuts impacted my cohort, I found myself looking for new ways to make a difference—and that led me to the Conour Animal Shelter. Since February 2025, I’ve spent my mornings there helping dogs build trust, stay healthy, and prepare for adoption. I lead enrichment walks, clean kennels, and support the day-to-day work that keeps the shelter running. I’ve always loved animals, but without a pet of my own in recent years, this work has filled that space in a really meaningful way. One of the dogs I’ve worked with most, Monroe, was feral when she arrived—now she wags her tail when she sees me and curls up in my lap. It’s moments like that which remind me that love given is never wasted.

My Role at Conour Animal Shelter:

  • Facilitate socialization activities to help dogs build trust with humans and interact safely with other animals.

  • Lead structured walks and enrichment sessions to support physical health and reduce kennel-related stress.

  • Clean and sanitize kennels regularly, ensuring a safe, hygienic environment that meets animal welfare standards.

  • Assist with weekly facility maintenance, helping create a welcoming and functional space for staff, volunteers, and potential adopters.
